After the acceptance from the builder on 31 July 2018 until the end of 2023, Eesti Energia has had to spend €53 million on the maintenance, repairs and investments of the Auvere Power Plant. According to the energy company’s calculations, at least another €10 million must be spent in 2024–2025 to achieve the 92% reliability for the plant. Other necessary investments may have to be added to this amount.

The extensive unscheduled standstills, which have lasted 531 days in total, have occurred mainly due to the defective technical solution of the external heat exchangers. Replacement of the heat exchangers from their design to installation has been a time-consuming job that took almost two years in total.

According to the original plan, the Auvere Power Plant was supposed to contribute to Estonia’s energy security and be able to supply to the grid up to a quarter of the energy consumed in Estonia in a year. However, if the plant is not working, it cannot generate electricity or bring its price down for the consumers at critical moments.
