ABUJA-TALLINN, 3 August 2015 - Auditor General Alar Karis will be the mentor of the Office of the Auditor General for the Federation in Nigeria, where he will be advising the management of the country’s supreme audit institution in the area of management. Karis was invited to be a mentor within the scope of the joint programme of the supreme audit institutions of Sweden and English-language African countries. Fifty six candidates who represented nine African countries wanted to participate in the programme.
The problems in the Nigerian Office of the Auditor General don’t lie in the professional audit skills, but in the communication skills required for effective management and the ability of managers to cooperate with each other,” said Alar Karis, who delivered the first mentorship course in Nigeria last week.
The others participating in the programme in addition to Karis are former Auditor General of Lithuania Giedre Svediene, who was selected to mentor the Office of the Auditor General of Botswana; representative of the Swedish National Audit Office Jan Landahl who helps Kenya;, Magnus Lindell, who is also from the Swedish National Audit Office and mentors Sierra Leone; Margareta Åberg from the Swedish National Audit Office who helps the Republic of South Africa; and André van Ommeren from the Court of Audit of the Netherlands, who mentors the management of the Office of the Auditor General of Zimbabwe.
The goal of the programme is to develop the strategic management skills of the heads of national audit offices in English-language African countries. The programme is coordinated and its costs are covered by the Swedish National Audit Office.
