TALLINN, 12 November 2018 – Today at 11, the Auditor General Janar Holm, submitted to the President of the Riigikogu, Eiki Nestor, the annual report of the National Audit Office of Estonia, which focuses on five areas that are important in terms of the development of Estonia and the welfare of people, but the solutions for problems associated with which have been partial, seeming or the decisions have been postponed.
The report centres on the pension insurance system, health care system, new system for supporting work ability, and internal and external security. “We can once again say that everyone knows these problems. They know, but coming up with solutions is going very slowly. This is why it is important to bring these topics back into focus,” the Auditor General Janar Holm stated at the meeting with the President of the Riigikogu.
The Auditor General emphasised that thanks to everyone’s joint efforts, Estonia has never been wealthier than now. Revenue in the state budget has increased as much as 66% over the last ten years. “Money, however, is not all it takes to govern the state and resolve issues. In the new election cycle, we must not give in to the temptation to come up with more and more new initiatives, expensive promises in order to fight off the knowledge that first we need to resolve issues that have long been waiting for a solution. Instead of always inventing new replacement activities, we should be deciding what it is that we do and not do as a state, and review all our activities and tasks. And decide how we can fix up the things that serve as a basis for everything, things that everyone “already knows”, that are important, and the not addressing of which or not systematically addressing of which will result in consequences that will directly affect Estonian welfare and society,” Janar Holm said.
