TALLINN, 27 November 2015 – Auditor General Alar Karis invited member of the Riigikogu Juhan Parts to a meeting in the National Audit Office on Tuesday, 1 December, to form an opinion on Parts as a possible candidate for a member of the European Court of Auditors on the request of the Minister of Finance.

During the meeting with Juhan Parts, the Auditor General wants to find out how Parts feels about the possibility of working for the Court of Auditors, what he thinks about the present work of the Court of Auditors, and what he would change in the work of the Court of Auditors to guarantee that outputs have maximum benefits for the EU as whole, as well as for each Member State. The Auditor General would also like to ask Parts how he would develop the relations between the European Court of Auditors and the supreme audit institutions of the Member States, and improve cooperation.

Background

Today, Minister of Finance Sven Sester asked Auditor General Alar Karis for his opinion on the minister’s plan to make a proposal to the Government of the Republic to nominate Juhan Parts as candidate for a member of the European Court of Auditors. The request of the Minister of Finance is based on clause 12 3) of the Rules of the Government of the republic, which states that the candidate for a member of the European Court of Auditors is nominated by the Minister of Finance after hearing the opinion of the Auditor General.
