TALLINN, 17 October 2018 – The National Audit Office has won this year’s Clear Message Award in the Promoter category. The National Audit Office constantly strives to present all of its materials in a way that eschews verbosity and is understandable to all taxpayers. All reports issued by the National Audit Office are edited for language and content. This approach also applies to the other texts made available to the general public, such as presentations and speeches. The National Audit Office’s staff includes two editors.

Press release of Institute of Estonian Language:

Announcing the winners of this year’s Clear Message competition

Press release 17.10.2018

The 2018 Clear Message Award recipients are the Science News section of the Vikerhommik morning radio show, the ‘World of Ernits’ caricature section of the Eesti Ekspress newspaper, the digital news website geenius.ee and the National Audit Office. Competition patron Ülle Madise will present the awards to the winners on 17 October at a gala event being held at the Office of the Chancellor of Justice.

Ülle Madise has said that an official text should not be a bureaucratic avalanche of words in which the basic idea is smothered. She feels that the time for using secret guild codes and looking down on non-guild members is over.

The award for the consumer text with the best clear message goes to the Science News section of the Vikerhommik morning radio show. Science journalist Priit Ennet has a gift for relating the latest science news and research results to ordinary listeners in a way they will understand.

In the consumer text category the jury also emphasised the contributions made by Vikerraadio’s Family Show, the Inclusion Handbook (2014) by Hille Hinsberg and Urmo Kübar and Estonian Public Broadcasting’s series of radio shows and articles entitled “How to live to be 100 and still be active in your 90s”.

The award for the consumer image with the best clear message goes to the World of Ernits caricatures. Every week Heiki Ernits publishes his ‘World of Ernits’ caricatures in the Eesti Ekspress newspaper and they are topical, witty and easy to understand.

Honourable mentions in the consumer image category went to the National Institute for Health Development’s exercise pyramid and the map app for Tallinn’s cycling tracks.

The award for the consumer text and consumer image combination with the best clear message goes to the digital news website geenius.ee. This website has been reporting on complex technological issues in a simple and logical manner for three years.

Honourable mentions in the consumer text and consumer image combination category went to the e-magazine edasi.org, ETV’s Talk It Over panel show and the joint project of the Estonian Health Insurance Fund and the Estonian Association of Dentists known as ‘Mouth School’.

This year’s Clear Message Award in the Promoter category has been won by the National Audit Office, which constantly strives to present all of its materials in a way that eschews verbosity and is understandable to all taxpayers.

Honourable mentions in the promoter category went to Statistics Estonia and the Estonian Road Administration.

Special prizes have also been awarded to Risti congregation preacher Annika Laats and rally driver Ott Tänak’s navigator Martin Järveoja.

Nominees for the 2018 Clear Message Awards were assessed by a jury comprising representatives of the Estonian Association of Copy Editors, the European Commission Representation in Estonia, the Estonian Graphic Designers Association, the e-Governance Academy and the company OÜ Spurt.
