German Ambassador Julius Bobinger decorated Auditor General Mihkel Oviir with the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany last night, 28 January 2008, on behalf of the German president.
With the order the Federal Republic of Germany seeks to recognise individuals who contributed to the development of legal-political structures and the strengthening of bilateral relations between Estonia and Germany in the 1990s after Estonia regained its independence. The ambassador commended Oviir for his personal contribution and principled dedication. The ambassador noted that Oviir’s actions were accompanied by close cooperation between institutions of the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation, legal agencies in the states of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schleswig-Holstein, Sachsen and Brandenburg and the German Ministry of Justice.
Mihkel Oviir was a chancellor with the Ministry of Justice between 1992 and 2002.
