TALLINN, 6 May 2019 – From 7–8 May 2019 the National Audit Office will hold the spring seminar of the Working Group on Environmental Auditing (WGEA) of the European Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (EUROSAI) in cooperation with the state audit institution of Cyprus in the mountain village of Kalopanayiotis.

The topic of this year’s spring seminar is advancing from the waste economy to a circulation economy. Almost 50 participants have registered to attend the event from 22 European SAIs. The invited experts include Peeter Eek, who specialises in waste issues, and representatives of the European Environment Agency’s waste and materials group and the EU Network for the Implementation and Enforcement of Environmental Law (IMPEL). Among the speakers are Ioanna Panayiotou, Environment Commissioner of Cyprus, and Charalampos Theopemptou, member of parliament and former Environment Commissioner.

At the spring seminar Auditor General Janar Holm will meet with Auditor General of Cyprus Dr. Odysseas Michaelides and deliver the closing speech. The moderator of this year’s spring seminar is Tuuli Rasso, head of the WGEA secretariat and representing Estonia due to the presidency. Senior Auditor Viire Viss will introduce the findings of the hazardous waste audit carried out in Estonia and chair the parallel session on cooperative auditing for circulation economy. Auditor Alar Jürgenson will conduct the debate on waste incineration. Kaire Kesküla, adviser from the WGEA secretariat, will provide an overview of the progress made in the project of the global public e-course on waste auditing (MOOC) supervised by the National Audit Office.

The National Audit Office organises spring EUROSAI WGEA seminars in addition to the annual conventions. Although these spring events were initially just small-scale meetings to discuss a narrow range of topics, the seminars have become almost as extensive and well-attended as the annual conventions.
