TALLINN, 30 March 2004 - On Wednesday and Thursday, the Auditor General, Mihkel Oviir and the Chief Auditor of the Financial Audit Department, Kaie Karniol will attend the meeting of the heads of supreme audit institutions of the Central and East European Countries acceding to the EU and of Cyprus, Malta and Turkey and of the European Court of Auditors taking place in Riga.

The meeting covers the issues of audit quality assurance and the management of internal control. The Audit Issues Working Group and the Audit Manuals Working Group will provide a report on their work; the representatives of the EUROSAI, the INTOSAI development initiative IDI and the SIGMA programme will introduce new training opportunities.

The meeting will end with a discussion on the management of future co-operation with the audit institutions of EU candidate countries, since this meeting marks the end of the form of co-operation introduced in 1996 and the beginning of the joint activities of the supreme audit institutions of the 25 EU Member States and the European Court of Auditors.
