Auditor General Alar Karis attended ARABOSAI Environmental Committee meeting in Kuwait and met with the speaker of the National Assembly

AL-KUWAIT – TALLINN, 14 February 2017 – Auditor General Alar Karis attended the meeting of the ARABSOSAI (Arab Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions) Environmental Committee in Kuwait, where he also delivered a presentation. The Auditor General also met with the speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly Marzouq Al-Ghanim.

The Estonian Auditor General as the head of the Working Group on Environmental Auditing of the European Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (EUROSAI WGEA) focused in his presentation on the experience of international cooperative audits in Europe and the importance of cooperation as such, which manifests itself the best in the context of environmental problems and sustainable development.

In his opening speech, President of the State Audit Bureau of Kuwait (the equivalent of the auditor general in Estonia) Adel Abdulaziz Al-Sarawi emphasised the importance of the exchange of experience at the joint ARABOSAI-EUROSAI meetings.

The meeting of the Environmental Committee, which was held on 12 and 13 February 2017 and hosted by the State Audit Bureau of Kuwait, was also attended by the representatives of the supreme audit institutions of Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Oman, Mauritania and Tunisia. The Estonian Auditor General attended the event on the invitation of the President of the State Audit Bureau of Kuwait.

Auditor General Alar Karis also met with the speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly Marzouq Al-Ghanim and observed a meeting of the parliamentary Budgets and Final Accounts Committee, where the critical audit report on the expenses of the Ministry of Justice was discussed.

Auditor General Karis was also invited as a guest to the popular chat show “Hala Kuwait” hosted by Tarek Aleryan on KTV2, where he gave a 15-minute interview.

The cooperation between the supreme audit institutions of Estonia and Kuwait is based on the agreement signed by Auditor General Alar Karis and President of the State Audit Bureau of Kuwait Adel Abdulaziz Al-Sarawi on 5 December 2016. The purpose of the cooperation agreement is to exchange practical experience at the level of auditors proceeding from shared interests, create effective contacts between the audit institutions of the two countries and a set up a network of experts. The agreement comes with an action plan for the next four years, which includes meetings of the experts of the two audit institutions on certain topics that will be held at least twice a year either in Estonia or Kuwait.
