State Auditor to participate in the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the cooperation agreement between the supreme audit institutions of the Baltic Countries

TALLINN, 28 October 2004 - On the invitation of Raits Cernajs, the Auditor General of Lativa, Mihkel Oviir, the Auditor General and Rein Söörd, the Head of the International Relations Service will take part in the celebrations on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the cooperation agreement between Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian State Audit Offices in Riga on 28 October 2004. The former Auditors General – Hindrek Peeter Meri and Vidas Kundrotas – will also attend.

The cooperation agreement was entered into on 14 October 1994 by the Auditors General at the time – Vidas Kundrotas (Lithuania), Raits Cernajs (Latvia) and Hindrek Peeter Meri (Estonia).

The parties to the agreement decided to cooperate in exercising control over the ownership and use of state assets, by organising joint seminars, conferences, consultations, by exchanging information and promoting direct relations between practitioners and scientists in issues concerning improvements to the work procedures of audit institutions, training and education of staff, more efficient use of IT and other. It was agreed to meet at least once a year. The agreement has evolved into meetings of the delegations of supreme audit institutions of the Baltic Countries, with the representatives from the Nordic Countries and Poland participating since 2000.

The Auditor General, Mihkel Oviir will award Jonas Liaucus, Auditor General of Lithuania and Raits Cernajs, Auditor General of Latvia the medal of the State Audit Office to acknowledge their outstanding contribution to the cooperation between the supreme audit institutions of the Baltic Countries.
