Organisation of hazardous and radioactive waste management (follow-up audit)
The objective of the audit is to give an assessment of the organisation and financing of hazardous waste management, and in particular the management of the state-owned Vaivara hazardous waste management centre post-2018. In respect of radioactive waste, an assessment is given of the timeliness and financing of the implementation of planned activities and of the provision of clear guidelines by the state on the management of naturally occurring radioactive material.
The main questions in the audit are the following:
1. Has the Ministry of the Environment coped with past issues and is the Ministry of the Environment performing its role in managing hazardous waste?
2. Is the Vaivara hazardous waste management centre owned by the Ministry of the Environment being managed in a way that does not pollute the environment and is economically sustainable?
3. Has the state (Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications) ensured options for safe management of artificial radioactive waste and naturally occurring radioactive material?
